TWC Session 11

This week’s topic is on technology assessment and forecasting. This is to allow us to foresee what the future trends of technologies are. It enables us to look into the future to determine what are the opportunities that we can take to make improvements.  Actually, it is all about the prediction of future technologies.
We started off the lesson with two quotes. First quote is by Charles Kettering which says “My interest is in the future because I am going to spend the rest of my life there.” This shows that the future is of great importance and forecasting what will happen in the future is important. Forecasting starts now and you can foresee what trends will emerge in the future; you will benefit from the forecasting since you will be going into the future. Another quote from the African Proverb says “Tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today”. This means that we have to be prepared for the future technologies. In order to be prepared, one has to do forecasting and this is especially important for technologies because it is advancing rapidly. Through forecasting, we will be able to find out where improvements can be made and coming out with solutions to solve the problems. It is bad to not forecast as we can only learnt from what has happened; we cannot take steps to counter these problems before they occur.
We then went on to watch a video entitled “Microsoft's Vision of the Future (Parody)”. This video shows us a number of possible technologies that we will have in the future. It says that in the future, we will have something we get everything we need in the palms of our hands and it also shows that in the future newspaper will be electronic which helps to save tress. It talk about many cool technologies and said that we are just 498 years away from these technologies. However, I feel that we do not have to wait for such a long time. Since technologies are advancing so quickly, the impossible will soon become possible. I believe that it will take about 20 years before some but not all of these technologies will be in the market.
The second video that we watched is “Mastering the Megatrends”. This video is about Siemens mastering the megatrends, showing urbanisation, healthcare and energy. It shows that natural resources are becoming scarcer and scarcer and the video is showing ways of using technologies to come up  solutions in crucial areas like power, healthcare and water. It mentioned that water in the most valuable resources and Siemens provides solutions for developing supplies of water and for purifying it. It also mentioned that demand of energy in increasing at an unbelievable pace and to meet these demands we meet technologies to that are both economical and environmental friendly way to provide energy. Hence, I can see that the future technologies are actually developed to help improve the environment; future technologies will be created with the emphasis of helping the environment. Thus, I can foresee that in the future, despite of having more advanced technologies, we will also have a greener environment.
Another quote then we talked about is “Look before, or you'll find yourself behind” by Benjamin Franklin. This is true in especially in the area of technologies. Technologies are changing everyday and if you don’t look into the future, soon you will be outdated. Moving on to the next quote by John F Kennedy which says “For time and the world do not stand still… Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future.” Change is evitable and one has to try to be ahead of the change and respond to the change or you will be left behind.
Overall, I think that forecasting is good to help us foresee what will be in the future and it will keep us aware of the changes that will take place. This is especially important in technology as there is it is changing at an exponential rate.
